The current BNP government has itself admitted that corruption in the country has increased, Leader of the Opposition and Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman said.

He made the remark on Friday morning at the triennial national conference of the Bangladesh Paribahan Sramik Federation, a transport workers’ body.

The Jamaat chief said: “The fascist government banned Jamaat on August 1, and it had to leave the country on August 5” — a reference to events in 2024. He said workers had sacrificed the most in that year’s July movement and lost the most lives, having taken to the streets not against quotas but to build a discrimination-free Bangladesh.

Criticizing the BNP government, he said: “Prime Minister Tareque Rahman’s government is trying to give everyone jobs. He has given jobs, yes — but at tempo stands. Bangladesh rejects this kind of job.”

On corruption, Shafiqur Rahman said: “The newly elected government itself admits corruption has risen. We see that everything runs on Tareque Rahman’s signal — so why does corruption not stop at his signal?” He alleged the government had failed morally, saying transport workers were being harassed by extortionists linked to the ruling party.

Demanding due honor for the July protesters, he said: “Seventy percent of people voted for a referendum. If the government is democratic, it must accept that verdict.”
