Amar Bangladesh (AB) Party has criticized the BNP government’s activities over its first six months, calling the government’s pace and progress disappointing. The party alleges that rising prices, electricity and gas shortages, partisan appointments, campus violence, and economic uncertainty have increased public suffering.
Party leaders made the remarks Monday, August 17, at 11:30 a.m. at a press conference titled “Six Months of Government: Promise vs Reality! A Complete Account Before the People,” held at the party’s central office in Bijoynagar, the capital.
AB Party Chairman Mojibur Rahman Manju said six months is not a short period for evaluating an elected government. However, he said it would not be right to draw a complete verdict of success or failure on the government within this period alone. He claimed the situation has worsened compared to the interim government period.
He said people’s cost of living has risen, but living standards have not improved accordingly. He said partisan appointments in various administrative positions and incidents of campus violence have raised questions about the government’s governance. He claimed unemployment has risen alongside declining employment, as many factories have shut down due to the electricity and gas crisis.
Manju also alleged that despite advice to sit down with all political parties to address the energy crisis, the government did not listen.
AB Party General Secretary Barrister Asaduzzaman Fuad said a culture of political violence is returning to the country. However, he said political tolerance being maintained so far is a positive sign, and called for it to be maintained throughout the government’s full term.
He further alleged that BNP has failed to implement several important promises from its 31-point pledge, including not politicizing the sports sector and restructuring the judiciary and the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
Fuad said the interim government’s ordinance on enforced disappearances and human rights had been repealed and replaced with a weaker law. He also demanded that parliament establish clear policy and a transparent process for privatizing the energy sector.
