A possible understanding with Oman would not immediately reopen the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian state broadcaster IRIB reported Wednesday, citing an informed source.
The source said discussions over future shipping arrangements in the strait were taking place only between Tehran and Muscat and did not involve the United States.
Even if Iran and Oman reach an agreement, the strait would remain closed while what Tehran describes as U.S. violations continue, the source said.
The report said reopening the strait would depend on a change in U.S. conduct and the correction of those alleged violations.
Iranian media had previously reported that Tehran was close to an understanding with Oman on a new shipping corridor if the United States stopped intervening in negotiations. Iranian officials have accused the United States of using military threats to influence the talks and delay an agreement. The claims were reported by Iranian state media and were not independently verified.
