MOULVIBAZAR — Police and the Fire Service recovered two bodies from ponds at two separate tea estates in Srimangal upazila of Moulvibazar district on Saturday, officials said.
The bodies were recovered in the morning and afternoon of May 9, police said.
Police identified the afternoon victim as Md. Abed Ali, 58, a farmer, whose body was found in a pond in block 4 of Fuskuri tea estate in Rajghat union. He was the son of the late Komaruddin of Sharerguj East Nawagaon area in Sindurkhan union, police said.
Local residents said Ali had been missing since Thursday, May 7.
Earlier the same morning, the body of Mohammad Hossain, 54, a rickshaw puller, was recovered from a pond at Ajay Hajra’s home in the Rampara area of Bharaura tea estate in Kalighat union, police said.
Hossain was the son of the late Sharbat Ali of Khojarkala village in Alokdia union of Cumilla’s Laksam upazila. Police said he had a mental illness.
According to police and local sources, residents alerted officers in the morning after spotting a person’s foot floating in the pond. Police then notified the Fire Service, and a rescue team retrieved the body in the presence of officers.
The recovery of two bodies from separate locations on the same day has alarmed residents.
Md. Abdur Razzak, the inspector of investigation at Srimangal police station, said one farmer’s body was recovered from the Fuskuri tea estate pond and one rickshaw puller’s body from the Bharaura tea estate pond.
The bodies have been sent to Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsies, and unnatural death cases are being processed at the police station, he said.
