DHAKA — Students preparing for the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examinations are suffering severely because of power cuts lasting 10 to 12 hours a day, Jamaat-e-Islami lawmaker Salahuddin Ayubi told parliament Sunday.

Speaking on a matter of urgent public importance in the National Parliament on Sunday, April 19, the lawmaker from the Gazipur-4 constituency said extended outages were crippling the country’s education system.

“The country’s education system has broken down because of the lack of electricity. SSC examinees are crying out today,” Ayubi said. “If immediate steps are not taken to address the power crisis on all sides, students will suffer enormously.”

He said various parts of the country were facing 10 to 12 hours of load-shedding a day, disrupting health care, knocking out irrigation and leaving SSC candidates in distress.

Without urgent action, those affected will continue to bear the brunt, Ayubi said. He urged the energy and power minister to take immediate steps to address the problems.

He also invited the tourism minister to visit his constituency, asking the minister to bring the area under a special government-backed tourism initiative.
