Israeli forces are alleged to have fired phosphorus shells, launched airstrikes and carried out heavy artillery bombardment across various areas of southern Lebanon. Lebanon’s state news agency, the National News Agency (NNA), reported on these attacks.
Israeli forces carried out heavy shelling early Saturday in various areas of Mansouri, Beit al-Sayyad and Majdal Zoun in southern Lebanon. These areas also saw extensive explosions overnight. The attack on Beit al-Sayyad caused extensive damage. NNA claims almost no house in the village escaped damage.
Explosions were also reported in the Hadatha, Beit Yahoun and Aita al-Shaab areas. Israeli drones were seen flying over the skies of various towns and villages in western and central southern Lebanon.
Israeli fighter jets carried out two strikes in the Ali al-Taher hill area, north of Nabatieh al-Fawqa. Artillery shelling also struck the Dahwat Kafr Remman area, Dabsha hill and the forested area of Ali al-Taher. These attacks are alleged to have involved the use of phosphorus shells.
International human rights organizations had previously raised concerns over allegations of phosphorus use in southern Lebanon. Amnesty International has said the use of white phosphorus in populated areas creates serious risks for civilians, and that international humanitarian law imposes strict restrictions on the use of such weapons.
The recent attacks come at a time when a U.S.-mediated security framework is supposed to be in effect between Lebanon and Israel. Even so, attacks and tension in southern Lebanon have continued.
