Five young men who were the targets of an attempted ‘push-in’ by India’s Border Security Force (BSF) have been stranded for nine straight days at two points on the border zero-line in Roumari upazila of Kurigram. Two of them are at the Goytapara border and three at the Bhandurchar border. With no resolution so far, they remain in uncertainty.

They have been spending their days under a thin plastic shelter through heavy rain and intense sun. With a lack of adequate food, clean drinking water, and bathing and sanitation facilities, they are in extreme distress.

On the matter, the commander of the Jamalpur 35 BGB Battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Hasanur Rahman, said: ‘High-level communication is continuing with the relevant authorities of the two countries with the aim of a peaceful resolution of the situation that has arisen.’

Meanwhile, the two countries’ border forces, the BGB and the BSF, are holding firm positions over the situation, with both monitoring it from their respective sides.

On the morning of June 14, the BSF tried to push six people, including two children and their parents, into Bangladesh through the Goytapara border, and another three through the Bhandurchar border, according to the BGB. Sensing it, the BGB resisted, and the group was forced to take position on the Indian side of the border zero-line.

Later, at dawn last Wednesday, the two children and their parents were moved to a safe place from the Goytapara border zero-line. But two people at the Goytapara border and three at the Bhandurchar border remain stuck.
