VIENNA — The OPEC Fund for International Development has announced a $1.5 billion (about 15,000 crore taka) aid package for developing countries to help them cope with the energy and trade crisis caused by the Iran war.
The Vienna-based agency said the funds would be disbursed in phases from now through 2028. The “needs-based” facility was created mainly to help developing countries cope with growing economic pressure.
The OPEC Fund said the war had disrupted supply chains for essentials such as food, fuel and fertilizer, and that prices had risen several-fold. The package will help governments of developing countries cover additional costs and ensure uninterrupted supplies of essential goods, it said.
The agency added that the package would offer special protection to countries struggling to overcome the negative impact of the war on the global market and the slowdown in trade. The international development agency has provided financial assistance to developing countries in previous global crises as well.
