Iran will no longer abide by a memorandum of understanding if the United States fails to keep its promises, Iranian foreign ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei told journalists in Tehran on Monday. He called on the United States to abide by the memorandum.

The spokesman said Tehran had taken part in every round of negotiations with great care and seriousness, keeping in mind the interests and concerns of the Iranian nation. “After reaching the agreement, Iran worked with goodwill and seriousness to fulfil its commitments,” Baghaei said. “It is always the enemy that breaks its promises first; the Islamic Republic of Iran is never the first party to break a promise.”

Baghaei further said that if Washington failed to keep its promise to end the war, Iran would no longer abide by the memorandum of understanding it had signed with the United States. “Whenever the other side has failed to fulfil its obligations, we too have not kept ours. … We will continue to act this way,” he said.
