MOSCOW — Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is visiting Russia after peace talks with the United States in Pakistan were canceled. He arrived in Russia on Monday.

Araghchi is expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin during the trip and seek his support, observers said.

The foreign minister traveled to Russia after a peace push between Tehran and Washington failed to advance during mediation visits to Pakistan and Oman, two countries acting as go-betweens in talks over the deepening conflict in the Middle East.

Russia and Iran are close strategic allies. But Moscow, occupied with its continuing invasion of Ukraine, has so far stayed out of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

Citing Iranian state media, the AFP news agency earlier reported that Araghchi had blamed the United States for the failure of the first round of talks in mid-April during his visit to Pakistan. On Saturday, he said, “Despite progress in the previous round of talks, U.S. excessive demands prevented it from achieving its goals.” He added, “Safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is an important global issue.” According to Araghchi, the conflict has effectively shut down the strait, causing major disruptions to global oil and gas supplies.
