JASHORE, Bangladesh — A shop in Jashore’s Sharsha upazila has been fined 1 lakh taka for selling expired baby food made with unapproved coloring and no production date, consumer rights officials said.

Bismillah Store, in the Navaron area of Sharsha, was penalized following a drive Thursday afternoon, May 7, by members of the National Consumer Rights Protection Directorate’s Jashore office.

The baby food, made at a factory with no listed address, had been sold in the market for an extended period, officials said. A large quantity of unsafe baby food was seized during the operation.

Consumer rights officials said children consuming such food could develop a range of serious illnesses, including the risk of kidney failure.

The shop’s owner, Billal Hossain, was fined 50,000 taka under Section 37 of the Consumer Rights Protection Act, 2009, and another 50,000 taka under Section 45 — a total of 1 lakh taka.

The drive was led by Selimuzzaman, assistant director of the directorate’s Jashore office, with assistance from Sharsha police and a team from Jashore district police.
