MEHERPUR — A court in Meherpur sentenced a man to death on Monday for the 2022 killing of an ezbike driver in Sholmari village of Meherpur sadar upazila.
The court sentenced Bacchu Mia, the sole defendant in the murder of ezbike driver Jamal Hossain, to death by hanging. He was also fined Tk 50,000, with an additional two years in prison if the fine is not paid.
District and Sessions Judge S.M. Nasim Reza delivered the verdict at midday Monday, July 28. The condemned man, Bacchu Mia, is the son of Abdul Latif of Sholmari village in sadar upazila.
According to the case details, on Sept. 8, 2022, police recovered the body of Jamal Hossain, 54, from a lychee orchard in the New Sheikhpara area of Meherpur sadar upazila. He was an ezbike driver by profession. The next day, the victim’s younger brother, Alamgir Hossain, filed a murder case at Meherpur sadar police station against an unidentified person. After the investigation, investigating officer Inspector Mesbah Uddin Ahmed submitted a charge sheet to the court naming Bacchu Mia, the son of Abdul Latif of Sholmari village, as the sole defendant. After the charge sheet, lengthy witness testimony and hearings, the court sentenced Bacchu Mia to death.
Public Prosecutor Saidur Razzak represented the state, and Advocate Ehan Uddin Mona defended the accused. After the verdict, Razzak said: “We are satisfied with this verdict. We hope Jamal’s family will find relief in seeing his killer brought to justice.”
Defense lawyer Ehan Uddin Mona said: “We will appeal this verdict to the higher court.”
Bacchu Mia was present in court when the verdict was announced. He was later taken to Meherpur district jail under police escort.
