A 26-year-old housewife, Shraboni Begum, has drowned in a fish enclosure in Madaripur Sadar upazila. The accident happened at around 12 noon on Sunday (28 June) in the Shikinohata area of Mostafapur union.
The deceased, Shraboni Begum, was the wife of Hatem Ali Faqir of the same area.
Police and local sources said Shraboni had gone to a fish enclosure belonging to Sagar Haowlader, in an area near her home, to collect mussels for ducks. After collecting the mussels, she was bathing there when she suddenly suffered an epileptic seizure and went under the water. Some time later, locals saw her floating in the water and informed her relatives. With the help of family and locals, she was rescued and taken to the 250-bed Madaripur District Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared her dead.
The hospital’s resident medical officer (RMO), Akhil Sarkar, said: “The woman who drowned had epilepsy. She had died before reaching the hospital.”
Madaripur Sadar Model police station officer-in-charge Abul Kalam Azad said: “A woman drowned in a fish enclosure while collecting mussels. On receiving the news, police visited the scene. Legal procedures are under way in the matter.”
