A shopkeeper in Madarganj, Jamalpur, has been fined by a mobile court for selling bottled petrol at an inflated price.

The fine was imposed after a raid on a shop in the Amlitala area of Gunaritala union in the upazila on Saturday (1 August) afternoon. The mobile court was conducted by Madarganj Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rasel Dio.

According to local sources, the shopkeeper had for a long time been selling bottled petrol at 180 to 200 taka a litre. Acting on a tip-off, the upazila administration raided the spot. Finding the allegation true, it fined the shopkeeper 1,000 taka to protect consumers’ interests. He was also sternly warned not to sell goods above the fixed price in future.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rasel Dio said: “If petrol, octane or any other essential or fuel product is sold above the government-fixed price, legal action will be taken against those responsible. Our raids will continue regularly so that no one can create an artificial crisis or make excess profit in the market.”

He added: “Such mobile-court raids by the upazila administration will continue in future to protect consumers’ interests and maintain order in the market. No leniency will be shown to anyone who breaks the rules.”

Local people present welcomed the administration’s initiative. In their view, regular market monitoring and mobile-court raids would reduce the tendency to sell goods at inflated prices and let ordinary consumers buy essentials at fair prices.
