NETROKONA — A drug addict’s attack injured his father and his wife in Kalmakanda upazila of Netrokona, locals said. The incident happened in Kalihala village in the upazila around 12:30 a.m. Thursday. Locals later admitted the father to the Kalmakanda Upazila Health Complex.

The accused is identified as Md. Imamul, 30, son of Abul Hasem, 60, of Kalihala village.

According to local residents and Abul Hasem, Imamul has long abused various drugs. When he cannot get money for drugs, he often assaults his wife, parents and other family members, they said. Late Wednesday night, Imamul demanded money for drugs from his wife. When she could not provide it, he began beating her. He then grabbed her by the throat and tried to strangle her, residents said.

Imamul’s father, Abul Hasem, then tried to stop him. Imamul beat Hasem as well. Locals later rescued Hasem and admitted him to the hospital.

“Imamul brought a machete from a room to attack me. Fearing for my life, I ran into a room and closed the door. He broke the door down and attacked me. My fingers were cut in the attack. Because of Imamul, our whole family lives in fear. Imamul has two small children. Fearing him, the children stay most of the time at their maternal uncle’s house. To pay for drugs, Imamul has destroyed an auto-rickshaw, land and many other things. I am now destitute,” Abul Hasem said.

Imamul could not be reached for comment.

Kalmakanda police station officer in charge Siddique Hossain said legal action would be taken on receipt of a complaint.
