Amir Maulana Mamunul Haque of the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis has expressed deep concern, anger, and strong condemnation over the ongoing persecution, eviction campaigns, and communal violence against Muslims in India’s West Bengal and Assam. He made the statement at the regular monthly meeting of the Central Executive Committee of the Bangladesh Khilafat Majlis.
Maulana Mamunul said the attacks on Muslim households, businesses, mosques, and Eidgahs in various areas of West Bengal, including Darjeeling, North Dinajpur, and Murshidabad, are extremely worrying. Similarly, the eviction campaigns and destruction of residences against the Muslim community in different parts of Assam are a gross violation of human rights.
He said it is the responsibility of the state to ensure the life, religious rights, and security of the minority Muslims. However, the role of India’s Hindu nationalist government and the concerned administration has made the situation even more alarming. He called on the United Nations, OIC, Muslim World, and particularly the Bangladesh government to take effective diplomatic initiatives on this issue.
The meeting was chaired by Secretary-General Maulana Jalaluddin Ahmed. Other speakers at the meeting included Senior Naib Amir Maulana Yusuf Ashraf, Naib Amir Maulana Shahinur Pasha Chowdhury, Maulana Korban Ali Kashemi, Maulana Mahbubul Haque, Deputy Secretary-General Maulana Ataullah Amin, Maulana Abdul Aziz, Mufti Sharafat Hossain, Maulana Tofazzal Hossain Mitaji, and Maulana Sharif Saidur Rahman.
The meeting discussed the instability and military tensions centered around Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, and Iran in the Middle East as a matter of deep concern for the entire Muslim world. Especially the ongoing tensions surrounding Iran have raised fears of escalating into a broader regional conflict.
The meeting called for immediate efforts to establish lasting peace in Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen, Iran, and the entire Middle East, ensure the right of Palestinians to return to their land, and protect the sanctity of Al-Aqsa Mosque. It also criticized the inaction of the United Nations and urged the Muslim world to unite, setting aside differences.
Speakers at the meeting said the country’s people have given a clear mandate in favor of constitutional amendments in the February 12 elections. The government has shown extreme disregard for public opinion by ignoring this mandate.
The meeting called for mobilizing public opinion through district-level civic gatherings to successfully implement the nationwide work program announced after the election results.
