Five personnel of the Indian Air Force (IAF) have been killed in an accident involving an AN-32 transport aircraft at the Jorhat air base in Assam, India. The tragedy occurred when the twin-engine turboprop aircraft crashed while landing on Saturday.

In a statement, the Indian Air Force expressed deep grief and condolences over the incident and released the identities of those killed. The dead are Prashant Singh, Shubham Kumar, Jitendra Sharma, Khemaram Kumawat, and Danish Alam. The statement said they had made the supreme sacrifice in service to the country while on duty.

The Indian Air Force has ordered a court of inquiry to determine the exact cause of the accident. The cause behind the crash will be determined through the investigation, it said.

Preliminary information from the air base and footage from the scene showed that the aircraft broke into two parts on the runway after the accident. The wreckage was scattered around the runway, and rescuers and emergency workers reached the site immediately to bring the fire under control and begin rescue operations.

The AN-32 has long been used as one of the Indian Air Force’s most important military transport aircraft. It plays a key role in supplying provisions, transporting cargo, and carrying out various operational support missions in remote and mountainous regions.
