A devastating fire has broken out at a coaching centre located in a multi-storey building in the Aliganj area of Lucknow, in India’s Uttar Pradesh state. At least 14 people were killed in the tragic accident on Monday (June 22) afternoon.
As the fire spread quickly, many people were trapped inside the building. According to various videos circulating on social media and accounts from witnesses, many students were seen jumping down from the first floor to save their lives, and one person was seen falling while making a desperate attempt to escape the fire.
Besides the coaching centre, the multi-storey building in the busy commercial area also housed a pet shop and several other shops. Witnesses said intense panic and chaos broke out across the whole area as soon as the fire started. On receiving the news, fire service personnel quickly reached the scene and began rescue work.
The destructive fire, which burned for more than an hour, was eventually brought under control. After it was contained, rescuers recovered at least 14 bodies from the scene of the accident.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the devastating fire. Conveying his condolences to the bereaved families, he announced financial assistance of 2 lakh rupees for each of the families from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. The administration has launched an investigation to find the actual cause of the fire.
