Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, the leader of the parliamentary opposition and chief of Jamaat-e-Islami, has sought a clarification of remarks made by the new Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Tribedi. He sought the clarification in a post on his verified Facebook page at 12:06 p.m. on Saturday.
Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Tribedi entered Bangladesh by road on Friday morning through the Petrapole-Benapole international checkpost, where he answered various questions from journalists. Seeking a clarification of his remarks, the Jamaat chief said: “A statement by the new Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Tribedi after his arrival in Bangladesh yesterday has come to our attention. Our government should find out from him what he meant by ‘India and Bangladesh becoming one.’ Just as India is an independent country, Bangladesh too is an independent country. If his remarks are not clarified, it will surely create confusion in the public mind.” He further said: “We want our government to resolve this matter. If he meant something of this kind in the literal sense, it is certainly condemnable. The matter needs to be clarified.”
