Taka at its strongest against dollar in over five years

A surge in remittances sent home by expatriates, the easy availability of dollars in the market and a rise in foreign currency reserves have together buoyed the Bangladeshi taka. The taka’s value against the US dollar is now in a fairly strong position. And not only against the dollar: over the past year the taka has been gradually building its strength, leaving neighbouring India’s rupee behind.

According to Bangladesh Bank’s latest figures, the country’s currency is currently in its strongest position against the dollar in five and a half years.

Central bank figures show that in the year from June 2025 to June 2026, the taka’s value against the dollar rose by 0.06 percent on a point-to-point basis. The taka’s value then rose by a further 0.77 percent between August 30 and September 17 this year. Over that period the dollar exchange rate fell from 123 taka 95 paisa to 123 taka. This has made the shift away from several years of the taka losing value clearer still.

According to Bangladesh Bank figures, the exchange rate was 85 taka 80 paisa to the dollar in 2021. It rose steadily after that to reach 123 taka 95 paisa. In the second half of this year, however, a change in that trend has appeared.

The Bangladeshi taka has meanwhile strengthened gradually against the Indian rupee over the past year.

Where buying 100 Indian rupees once cost up to about 140 taka, it has now come down to between about 127 and 130 taka. As of September 21, the Bangladeshi taka stood at about 1 taka 27 paisa to the Indian rupee.

The strengthening of the Bangladeshi taka is not the only thing at work behind this, however. The weakness of the Indian rupee on international markets is also a large part of it.

Bangladesh Bank figures show that towards the end of January 2026 the Indian rupee had weakened by 6.8 percent against the dollar compared with June of the previous financial year. Over the same period the taka was comparatively stable against the dollar. As a result, the taka has come into an advantageous position in the exchange rate between the two countries’ currencies.
