Spain have beaten Argentina 1-0 to win the World Cup for the second time. After an extraordinary final, Spain forward Ferran Torres said that beating Argentina to win the World Cup for his country made him feel destiny had been on their side.
Coming on as a substitute in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday night, Torres scored the only goal in the 106th minute of extra time, giving Spain a 1-0 win.
After the match, Torres told FIFA’s broadcast partner: “I think in the end this goal is not just for a few of us, but the collective effort of Spain’s 47 million people. Today destiny was written in our favour. This title was meant for us. Today we are far from our people, but we tried to be as close to them as possible.”
He added: “Finals are always hard. When you have a player like Lionel Messi on the other side, there is of course some anxiety. But we always believed in ourselves and wanted to play our own football. I think we managed to show that again.”
On how the goal felt, he said: “Scoring was a huge relief. I faced a lot of criticism throughout the tournament. But as I said before, destiny was written in our favour. Thank God. He always gives me the strength to move forward, and in the end he gives those who are truly worthy what they deserve.”
