Amid growing concern over pedestrian safety from reckless cycling, Cambridge, UK, has introduced a 15 mph (roughly 24 kph) speed limit for cyclists for the first time. The restriction has taken effect on a popular route in the city, known as the UK’s “cycling capital.”
Cambridgeshire County Council said local residents — particularly elderly people and families with young children — had long complained about excessive cyclist speeds. The new initiative was introduced with their safety in mind.
The Telegraph reported Sunday that the new speed limit applies to two shared-use paths alongside the city’s 16-mile “guided busway.” These paths are used jointly by pedestrians, cyclists, and horse riders. Speed-detection devices and warning signs have been installed at designated locations. Cyclists exceeding the limit will be instructed to slow down.
Authorities said police and busway safety team members will use speed-monitoring equipment to identify violators. First-time offenders may receive a warning, while repeat violations will result in stricter measures, including fines.
While some locals have welcomed the initiative, several cyclists have criticized the restriction. One rider sarcastically remarked that they were traveling at 16 mph. Another called the limit “ridiculous.”
Various videos posted online also show some cyclists traveling at nearly 20 mph on the busway path, passing dog walkers, elderly pedestrians, and young children. There is particular concern over modified personal e-bikes being ridden far faster than the designated limit.
Cambridge’s busway has faced safety issues since it opened in 2011. Last year, the council was fined £6 million over health and safety violations. The deaths of three people — Jennifer Taylor, Steven Moyer, and Kathleen Peats — in collisions with buses have also raised questions about the system’s safety.
The council said the effectiveness of the new speed limit will be monitored. Police have also said they have identified excessive speed as a problem in the area and are implementing regular patrols and enforcement measures to address it.
