The United States wants access to the United Kingdom’s strategic military bases in the ongoing war against Iran, and the Donald Trump administration is pressing Britain’s new government on the matter, British newspaper The Telegraph has reported.

The report said US President Donald Trump has asked the UK’s new prime minister, Andy Burnham, to continue permission to use the Royal Air Force’s RAF Fairford and the Diego Garcia base in the Indian Ocean. Trump raised the issue in a phone call with Burnham soon after he took office as prime minister on Monday.

Earlier, the UK government of Keir Starmer had initially refused to allow US B-2 bombers to operate from the Diego Garcia base. But London later changed its position and allowed US forces to use the base only for defensive measures and to “degrade Iran’s military capability.”
