Brazil and Norway meet in the 2026 FIFA World Cup round of 16 in a matchup that, on paper, should favor the five-time world champions. But the statistics tell a different story: Brazil have never beaten Norway in four meetings.

The two sides’ only previous World Cup encounter came in the 1998 group stage, when Norway stunned the 1994 champions with a 2-1 comeback victory. Brazil took the lead but Norway scored twice late to turn the match around and secure their knockout-stage berth.

Outside the World Cup, the record is no more encouraging for Brazil. The two teams have met four times in total, with Norway winning twice and the other two matches ending in draws. Their first meeting, a 1988 friendly in Oslo, ended 1-1. In 1997, also in Oslo, Norway thrashed a Brazil side featuring Ronaldo, Romario, Dunga, Cafu, and Roberto Carlos 4-2. Their most recent meeting in 2006 also ended 1-1.

Norway’s current squad is arguably stronger than any previous iteration. Erling Haaland, Martin Odegaard, Antonio Nusa, and Oscar Bobb lead a confident attack. They beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in the round of 32, with Nusa opening the scoring and Haaland sealing the win in the 86th minute after Amad Diallo equalized.

Brazil’s path was equally fraught. They fell behind against Japan before Casemiro equalized in the second half. Gabriell Martinelli’s goal in stoppage time secured a 2-1 victory under coach Carlo Ancelotti. However, questions were raised about Brazil’s defense, buildup play, and midfield balance. Lucas Paqueta’s injury is an additional concern.

Norway’s greatest weapon is Haaland, but Odegaard’s creativity, Nusa’s pace, and the transitional play of Oscar Bobb and Sander Berge could also trouble Brazil. The Selecao’s hopes rest on Vinicius Junior, Bruno Guimaraes, Casemiro, Gabriell Martinelli, and Neymar.

Statistics do not decide matches, but they create pressure. Brazil will aim to break their winless record against Norway, while Norway will look to maintain their extraordinary dominance over South America’s most decorated team.
