New navy chief receives rank badge

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and outgoing navy chief Admiral M Nazmul Hasan put the rank badge on the new navy chief on Thursday.

The prime minister’s deputy press secretary Zahidul Islam Rony said the ceremony was held in the morning at the Prime Minister’s Office in the Armed Forces Division at Dhaka Cantonment.

He said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman congratulated the new navy chief after putting on the rank badge. Vice Admiral Misbah-ul-Azim expressed gratitude to the prime minister on behalf of the Bangladesh Navy.

Those present included the prime minister’s defence adviser, retired Brigadier General A K M Shamsul Islam; air force chief Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmud Khan; the army’s quartermaster general, Lieutenant General Md Shahinur Rahman; the Armed Forces Division’s principal staff officer (PSO), Lieutenant General Mir Mushfiqur Rahman; the prime minister’s military secretary, Major General Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq; and the prime minister’s additional press secretary, Atiqur Rahman Rumon.

The government promoted Rear Admiral Khondkar Misbah-ul-Azim to vice admiral on July 16 and appointed him navy chief.

He was most recently Bangladesh’s ambassador to Oman. He succeeds Admiral M Nazmul Hasan in the navy’s top post.

A student of the 17th batch of Rajshahi Cadet College, Misbah-ul-Azim was commissioned into the Bangladesh Navy in 1987. During his service he has led various important naval commands including the Dhaka and Chattogram naval regions, and has also served as commandant of the Bangladesh Naval Academy.
