Begum Rokeya University authorities imposed Section 144 restrictions on the Rangpur campus Tuesday after Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir announced rival programs.
Classes and examinations will continue as scheduled, the university said.
Professor Md. Ferdous Rahman, the university’s additional registrar and proctor, confirmed the decision Tuesday, Aug. 4.
Rahman said processions, meetings and rallies had been prohibited to maintain peace and order on campus. Academic activities will remain normal, and classes and examinations will be held according to schedule, he said.
Earlier, the Rangpur city unit of Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir announced a protest procession and rally from Lalbagh Square to Abu Sayed Square at 5:30 p.m.
The Rangpur city unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal separately announced a protest procession and meeting at the park intersection near Abu Sayed Square at 4 p.m. Its member secretary, Rabiul Islam Rabi, urged leaders and activists from all city units to attend at the scheduled time.
The rival programs followed repeated clashes between Chhatra Dal and Chhatra Shibir members Monday, Aug. 3, over a banner at an exhibition titled “July Against Oppression” at the university’s Independence Memorial field.
Reports said participants threw bricks and chairs and chased one another, leaving several people from both groups injured.
