The US State Department has issued a global travel warning for American citizens living and travelling in various countries, amid rising tensions in the Middle East. The announcement came in a statement on Saturday (18 July). The statement said the current security situation was highly complex and unwanted escalation could occur at any time, calling on all US citizens abroad to exercise the highest caution, and particularly advising those in the Middle East to monitor the latest situation and regularly gather local security information.
The State Department said US citizens in various countries must follow security instructions issued by the nearest US embassy or consulate, and warned that international travel could be disrupted, with flight cancellations and temporary airspace closures in various countries threatening to derail travel plans. It also warned that US diplomatic installations in the Middle East and other regions were at risk of possible attack, and that various Iran-backed groups could target US embassies or citizens in various places. It advised US citizens abroad to avoid unnecessary travel and to contact the nearest US embassy quickly in an emergency.
