Two men are earning $50,000 each to watch all 104 matches of the 2026 World Cup as official “Chief World Cup Watchers” for US broadcaster Fox Sports. Kevin Akoto, a chef from Florida, and Austin Franklin, a content creator from Philadelphia, were selected from thousands of applicants for the role, which they have been performing for more than a week. They spoke to the BBC about the experience.

Fox Sports built them a specially designed glass-enclosed room in Times Square, New York, where passers-by can see them watching matches — drawing considerable curiosity from the public. The room contains recliner chairs, leather sofas, large-screen televisions, a foosball table and a range of football-related memorabilia and snacks.

“Everything a football fan could dream of is basically there,” Kevin said. Their duties go beyond simply watching matches; they are also required to produce content for viewers throughout the tournament.
