Manchester City’s new coach, Enzo Maresca, has not been able to keep the World Cup’s best player. Rodri, winner of the “Golden Ball” at the World Cup, is set to sign for Real Madrid. Real have already reached agreement with the 30-year-old midfielder on personal terms. All that remains now is for the two clubs to agree the transfer fee.
PSG and Barcelona also wanted to buy Rodri, the midfielder who won Spain the World Cup. The two-time Champions League winners PSG are said to have contacted Manchester City. But City did not want to let him go. Enzo Maresca, who took charge of City from Pep Guardiola, had wanted to build his midfield around Rodri. But the star midfielder’s reluctance has made that impossible. City have only one year left on the Spaniard’s contract. For that reason City offered him a new contract last April. But Rodri did not respond. The star midfielder wants to return to Madrid. Before joining Manchester City in 2019 he spent a year at Madrid’s other club, Atlético Madrid. It is mainly for his family that he wants to return to his own country. Earlier this week Rodri’s agent finalised the personal details in discussions with the Real authorities, the English outlet the Daily Mail reported.
Rodri is now waiting for the two clubs to agree the transfer fee. It is thought City may demand a large fee. Even that, however, will not work. For one thing only a year of his contract remains, and on top of that Rodri does not want to stay. And City have already signed the midfielder Elliot Anderson for 85 million pounds. They have also gone a long way towards signing the young Moroccan midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi, who made a stir at the World Cup. Their aim is therefore to raise money by selling Rodri.
Real are signing Rodri at the wish of José Mourinho, who has taken charge of the club for a second time. The Portuguese coach wants a senior figure like Rodri as a leader in midfield. It is also thought Rodri will fit well into Mourinho’s tactics. There is another calculation here for Premier League clubs. Signing Rodri means Real will let the French midfielder Eduardo Camavinga go. Another French midfielder, Aurélien Tchouaméni, will also lose his place in the regular side, so he too may leave Real. Premier League clubs are lying in wait to buy them.
