A family of four has died by suicide in Kerala, India, after being unable to pay their house rent, police said. The body of a seven-year-old child was recovered from a river near Piravom on Sunday, completing the recovery of all four family members’ bodies.
On Friday evening, the bodies of the child’s blind mother and two-year-old brother were recovered from the river. The father’s body was recovered on Saturday. The missing seven-year-old was searched for until Sunday morning, when the body was recovered from the river near Piravom.
Police and fire service members had been searching for the child since Saturday but did not find the body that day. When the operation resumed on Sunday morning, the body was recovered.
After investigation, police identified the mother and son as residents of a rented house in Kothamangalam. After confirming their identities, police began searching for the missing father and the couple’s daughter. According to police, the father, a resident of Palakkad, lived with his family in a rented house in Kothamangalam.
Police said that, unable to pay the rent because of a recent financial crisis, the family had sought help from Kothamangalam police station. Police had arranged alternative accommodation for them and they were due to move there on Sunday.
The investigation also recovered CCTV footage from a restaurant in Piravom, showing the four family members eating together on Thursday.
Police have taken statements from relatives and acquaintances and registered an unnatural-death case. The bodies will be handed over to relatives after autopsies.
