Bangladesh are not at the World Cup as a team, but they are very much part of the conversation. At the press conference the day before Argentina’s semifinal against England, coach Lionel Scaloni voiced his gratitude to Bangladesh’s supporters. “I thank the people of Bangladesh,” Scaloni said. “They always surprise us. To be Argentina supporters from so far away is truly unbelievable. It is always lovely to see people from so far away in the jersey. We will be happy if we can give them one more joy.”

Bangladeshis’ fervour has drawn the attention of the world’s media throughout the World Cup. After every Argentina win, processions, fireworks and Albiceleste jerseys have filled the streets of Dhaka, scenes that went viral on social media and appeared repeatedly in international outlets — and which caught Scaloni’s eye from thousands of kilometres away.

Argentina take the field against England in the semifinal at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on Wednesday. Spain have already secured their place in the final, beating France 2-0. Argentina now want to join them there — and to do so, they must beat England.
