Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) has been deployed in 11 districts for rescue operations as well as relief distribution and medical support amid the flooding caused by several days of heavy to very heavy rain. The districts are Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Chattogram, Feni, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Jamalpur. The information was given in a notice from BGB headquarters on Sunday (July 12).
It said BGB had been deployed in Bandarban, Cox’s Bazar, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Chattogram, Feni, Sylhet, Habiganj, Sunamganj, Netrokona and Jamalpur to rescue people affected by the disaster caused by continuous heavy rain, hill runoff, flooding and landslides, arrange safe shelter, distribute relief, provide emergency medical support, restore damaged communication links and protect vulnerable infrastructure.
The BGB said it was carrying out round-the-clock flood monitoring at a total of 90 points across the 11 districts to deal with the disaster, along with ensuring immediate rescue and humanitarian assistance as needed.
Notably, from various flood-affected areas of Bandarban, the BGB has already rescued more than 600 people from 122 families, including 116 tourists, taking them to safe shelter, distributing food among them and providing emergency medical care to 48 people. It also played an effective role in clearing fallen trees and debris to restore the Bandarban-Roangchhari road link. In addition, the BGB has taken emergency protective measures to save a steel bridge in Naikhongchhari that had become vulnerable to erosion, working tirelessly to ensure safe movement for the public.
