The finance and planning minister, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, has said the government is coming out of programs of the “fascist era” that went against the interests of the country.
He made the remarks to journalists in the capital on Sunday (July 12). At the time, a 12-member IMF mission was holding meetings at the finance ministry as part of talks on a new loan program. The mission is to meet various government offices throughout the week.
The finance minister said: “To build a modern Bangladesh, change has to be brought about in every sector, and in that continuity a new visa policy is also being prepared. A country’s visa policy itself tells how accessible the country is, or whether many adverse conditions prevail for entering it. A modern visa policy is needed, which is why it is being revised.” As a result, the visa policy would play a major role in boosting tourism and investment, he said, making it easier for foreign tourists, investors and skilled workers to come to Bangladesh and helping to increase foreign investment.
The finance minister said the government would not enter any program with the IMF that harmed the interests of the country’s people, and that protecting the economic interests of the people and the country was the government’s top priority in any new loan program.
