The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has filed a formal complaint with FIFA alleging controversial refereeing in their match against Argentina.
The country’s football authorities have also called for French referee Francois Letexier and his officiating team to be removed from the tournament’s remaining matches.
In last night’s drama-filled Argentina-Egypt match in Atlanta, Egypt led 2-0 but ultimately lost 3-2, exiting the World Cup. The team had been expressing frustration over several of the referee’s decisions since the final whistle. That grievance has now been formally lodged with FIFA.
Egyptian Football Association president Hany Abo Rida, in a letter sent to FIFA, has demanded an investigation into several key decisions in the match. He alleges that multiple refereeing decisions changed the course of the match and directly influenced the result.
Egypt’s objection centers on two incidents. The first is Mostafa Zizo’s goal in the 62nd minute, which the referee disallowed after a VAR review cited a foul in the build-up.
The second objection concerns Argentina’s winning third goal. Egypt claims that a foul on Hamdi Fathi before the goal was not properly reviewed by VAR. In their view, that decision also played a significant role in determining the match’s outcome.
At the post-match press conference, Egypt’s head coach Hossam Hassan expressed strong dissatisfaction with the officiating. He alleged the match’s outcome seemed predetermined and that the referee was under pressure from Argentina’s side. However, he presented no evidence to support this claim.
FIFA has not responded to Egypt’s complaint.
