Police have recovered the body of a 25-year-old housewife found hanging at her home in Alfadanga, Faridpur. Her husband’s family says she died by suicide, while her own family alleges she was killed in a planned attack and her body then strung up. The cause of death has not been established.
The incident took place on Friday evening in Shailmari village of Buraich union in the upazila. The woman, who had a seven-year-old son, was from the same village.
According to local and family sources, the woman and her husband married about eight years ago after eloping following a relationship; her family filed an abduction case at the time, but the two families reached a settlement two years ago.
The victim’s relatives allege that her husband did not work regularly and was addicted to drugs, and that the couple often quarrelled over such issues. On Friday they argued again over attending a neighbour’s function, after which she sent her son to her elder sister’s house.
One of the victim’s sisters said she grew suspicious on seeing her nephew alone. When she phoned the husband, he behaved rudely and threatened to kill the woman, she said; before evening he phoned to say the woman had died by suicide.
Another of the victim’s sisters said that when she reached the scene she saw the body hanging in the house, and that, given the height involved, it was not possible for the woman to have done so herself, so she must have been killed and hung up. The husband has been absent since the incident and his mobile phone is switched off, the family said. Relatives also alleged that when a younger sister tried to search the house afterwards, the husband stopped her, locked the house and left.
The husband’s mother said she was not at home at the time and learned of her daughter-in-law’s death after being informed.
Alfadanga police station investigating officer Mohammad Al-Amin said police recovered the body and sent it to the morgue at Faridpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy on Saturday. The true cause of death will be known after the autopsy report, he said.
