Chinese investment, technology and innovative cooperation are very important to making Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry more sustainable, environment-friendly and technology-driven, Commerce, Industries and Textiles and Jute Minister Khondaker Abdul Muktadir has said. He spoke as chief guest at the opening of the “Second Bangladesh-China Green Textile Expo 2026” held in the capital on Thursday.

The minister said China’s experience in industrialisation, technology development and poverty reduction is very valuable for Bangladesh. He called on Chinese investors to make meaningful investments in Bangladesh, creating a “win-win” situation for both countries. Khondaker Muktadir said China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, and that increasing Chinese direct investment is needed to reduce the trade gap between the two countries. He called for Chinese investment in reviving closed state-owned mills, modernising the jute sector, renewable energy and green industrialisation.

He said Bangladesh currently has the world’s highest number of green-certified garment factories, a bright example of the environmental awareness of the country’s entrepreneurs. The textile industry must be made more competitive and sustainable by ensuring efficient use of water, electricity and fuel. The minister expressed hope that such exhibitions, jointly organised by Bangladesh and China, would open new horizons for technology exchange, investment expansion and sustainable industrialisation.

China’s ambassador to Bangladesh, Yao Wen, spoke as special guest. Also speaking were Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Industry Association (BGMEA) director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury; Bangladesh-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) president Mohammad Khorshed Alam; Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA) president Abdul Hamid Pintu; Savar International Limited managing director Md Foyezul Alam; Chinese Enterprise in Bangladesh president Han Kun; and Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh vice-president Lisa Lu. The commerce minister later toured the expo’s stalls.

Organisers said renowned textile and garment companies, investors, technologists and business representatives from Bangladesh and China are taking part in the specialised international exhibition on the green textile industry. Alongside displays of environment-friendly and recyclable textile technology, top entrepreneurs from both countries are joining seminars and panel discussions. The expo is open to all from 10am to 7pm daily, and the three-day exhibition ends on 16 May.
