DHAKA — Commerce, Industry and Textiles and Jute Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir said Chinese investment, technology and innovation are vital to making Bangladesh’s textile and garment industry more sustainable, eco-friendly and technology-driven.
He spoke Thursday as chief guest at the opening of the Second Bangladesh-China Green Textile Expo 2026 in the capital.
Muktadir said China’s experience in industrialization, technology development and poverty reduction is valuable for Bangladesh. He urged Chinese investors to make meaningful investments in the country to create a win-win situation for both sides.
China is Bangladesh’s largest trading partner, Muktadir said, and more direct Chinese investment is needed to narrow the trade gap. He called for Chinese investment in reviving shuttered state-owned mills, modernizing the jute sector, renewable energy and green industrialization.
Bangladesh has the most green-certified garment factories in the world, the minister said, calling that a clear sign of environmental awareness among Bangladeshi entrepreneurs. Efficient use of water, electricity and energy must continue to make the textile industry more competitive and sustainable, he said.
Muktadir expressed hope that joint Bangladesh-China exhibitions of this kind will open new avenues for technology exchange, expanded investment and sustainable industrialization. Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen attended as special guest.
Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) director Shah Rayeed Chowdhury, Bangladesh-China Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCCI) president Mohammad Khorshed Alam, Bangladesh Garment Buying House Association (BGBA) president Abdul Hamid Pintu, Savor International Ltd. managing director Md. Foyzul Alam, Chinese Enterprise in Bangladesh president Han Kun and Overseas Chinese Association in Bangladesh vice president Lisa Lu also spoke.
The minister later toured the expo’s stalls.
Organizers said leading textile and garment companies, investors, technologists and business representatives from both countries are taking part in the specialized international green-textile exhibition.
Alongside displays of eco-friendly and recyclable textile technology, top entrepreneurs from both countries are joining seminars and panel discussions. The expo is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and runs through May 16.
