Israeli forces have arrested at least 120 Palestinians in the occupied West Bank over the past two days. The Palestinian prisoners’ rights organisation Samidoun (Palestine Centre for Prisoners Advocacy) gave the information in a report.
The report said the raids were carried out following an attack by Israeli settlers on land belonging to a Palestinian family. Four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed in that attack. Israeli forces began arresting Palestinians on a large scale afterwards as a retaliatory measure.
The raids were most intense in Nablus, Tulkarem and Hebron. In these areas troops searched ordinary people’s homes and smashed household property. Detainees were also physically abused during questioning in the field. Armed Israeli settlers, under military protection, also took part in some of the raids.
Samidoun described the arrests and raids as part of a “policy of punishment and revenge” against the Palestinian people.
The organisation called on the United Nations, the Red Cross and international human rights bodies to ensure urgent safety and protection for Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
