Ali Akbar Velayati, a senior foreign policy adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader, said in a post on X on Friday (26 June) that Gulf Arab states owe Iran a debt for the stability Iran provided through its management of the Strait of Hormuz over centuries, while accusing Western powers of bringing only looting and violence to the region.

Velayati wrote that Gulf Arab states owe Iran a debt because it is Iran’s centuries of managing the Strait that has maintained regional stability, adding: “But since the West arrived, all that has grown here is looting and violence.”

He warned the Gulf states not to place confidence in what he described as “the mercenary statements of these politically immature regional actors,” adding: “Know that your survival depends on the scraps from this table.”

Velayati also said that in the current “major restructuring of the world order,” peripheral and minor players have no seat and will be excluded, and that their strategic survival would depend on Tehran’s tolerance.

Meanwhile, the naval arm of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued strict warnings to vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, saying safe passage through the strategically vital waterway was possible only via official routes designated by the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tensions and diplomatic activity involving Iran, the United States and Gulf states over control of the Strait and regional security have continued.
