PATUAKHALI — Six students were detained with weapons after an exam in Bauphal upazila of Patuakhali and sent to the police station, authorities said. The incident occurred Thursday, April 30, at Dhanadi Kamil Madrasa in the upazila.

Those detained are Sifat, 15, Md. Masum Mridha, Md. Sihab Hossain, Md. Miyad Hossain, Md. Hridoy Hossain and Nayan Hossain.

Sifat, detained with a weapon, is the son of Zahirul Islam of Boro Dalima village in the upazila. He is a ninth-grade student at the local Chhoto Dalima Abdus Salam Mridha Secondary School. Dakhil candidates Md. Masum Mridha and Md. Sihab Hossain were taking the exam from Ramnagar Islamia Dakhil Madrasa, while Md. Miyad Hossain, Md. Nayan Hossain and Md. Hridoy Hossain were taking it from Boro Dalima Dakhil Madrasa.

Center superintendent Maulana Md. Nurul Amin and supervising official Maulana Md. A. Rab said students of Ramnagar Islamia Dakhil Madrasa and Boro Dalima Dakhil Madrasa clashed after the Arabic second paper exam Tuesday, April 28, when an irregular candidate was denied access to view another student’s answer script.

They said the matter was settled through teachers of the two madrasas before the Bengali first paper exam began Thursday, April 30. But after the exam, students from the two institutions appeared poised to clash again.

At one point, while leaving the exam, Sifat — a ninth-grade student at the adjacent Chhoto Dalima Abdus Salam Mridha Secondary School — was detained with an axe in his bag with the help of Sub-Inspector Sihab on duty at the center. Several of his associates fled with switchblades and locally made weapons. A total of six people were sent to the police station in connection with the incident.

Officials also said Sifat confessed that he had brought the axe in his bag at the call of Miyad, a Dakhil candidate from Boro Dalima Madrasa, who is an older man from his area. The likelihood of an untoward incident after the exam was high, and he brought the axe in preparation, gathering with several of his associates, they said.

Bauphal Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Sirajul Islam said: “I am in a meeting of the law and order committee. All those detained fall under the Children Act. We have informed the probation officer at the station. A decision will be made when the officer arrives.”
