LALMONIRHAT — The Late Mahbub-ul-Alam Memorial Foundation distributed school bags and supplies to 500 meritorious and underprivileged students in Kaliganj upazila of Lalmonirhat.

The items were distributed at an event held Monday, April 20, at the Chaparhat High School grounds in the upazila.

Foundation chair Ashrefa Zaman presided over the event. Md. Rokon Uddin Babul, the member of Parliament for Lalmonirhat-2 constituency, had been scheduled to attend as chief guest but sent a written message after being unable to attend due to illness.

“There is no alternative to education for moving disadvantaged people forward,” Babul said in his message. The late Mahbub-ul-Alam worked his entire life to expand education in the region, including by founding schools and madrasas, he said. He praised the foundation’s education-friendly initiative bearing Alam’s name and urged students to grow into citizens capable of meeting the challenges of a new era.

Md. Rashedul Haque Prodhan, deputy commissioner and district magistrate of Lalmonirhat, attended as guest of honor. “This step by the foundation for meritorious students will play an important role in expanding education at the grassroots level,” he said. “The wealthy in society should also come forward for such service-oriented work.”

Special guests included Kaliganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shamima Akhter Jahan, Assistant Superintendent of Police (B-Circle) Jayanta Kumar Sen, Upazila Primary Education Officer Abida Khatun and Doikhawa Adarsha Degree College principal Md. Mofazzal Hossain.

Also present were Chaparhat Technical and BM College principal Anwara Begum, Shamsuddin-Komaruddin Degree College principal Saleh Ahmed, Chaparhat High School headmaster Hitendranath Singha, Chaparhat Girls’ High School headmaster Mofakhkharul Islam, along with teachers from various educational institutions and local dignitaries. At the end of the event, the guests handed bags, notebooks, pens and other supplies to the students.
