The government has taken five student-friendly measures to hold the HSC and equivalent exams smoothly, giving the highest importance to students’ interests despite the bad weather. These include allowing absent candidates to sit make-up exams, awarding full marks for two flawed questions in the Physics first paper, and temporarily suspending those responsible for setting the questions.
The prime minister’s adviser on Education and Primary and Mass Education, Mahdi Amin, gave the information in a post on his verified Facebook account on Wednesday (15 July).
He said that on Wednesday, HSC and equivalent exams had been held in a spontaneous and peaceful atmosphere at 2,583 exam centres across the country, except the Chattogram board. Alongside a significant improvement in the weather, students had taken part with considerable enthusiasm, and the elected government had recently taken timely, student-friendly steps to resolve the difficulties in holding exams caused by the bad weather.
The five measures are: First, based on the views of divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, the chairmen of all education boards, Meteorological Department officials and stakeholders — and giving priority to the interests of the great majority of students — it was unanimously decided to keep exams running nationwide, except the Chattogram board, according to the pre-set schedule.
Second, local administrations were directed to take any necessary steps, including changing centres, postponing exams or extending exam time, if travel or waterlogging caused problems anywhere.
Third, absent students who could not sit any subject of the ongoing HSC and equivalent exams because of adverse weather or other unavoidable reasons will be able to sit those subjects on the same date and at the same time set by the Education Ministry, using the same question papers as the Chattogram board’s already-postponed subjects.
Fourth, all candidates will be given full marks for the two flawed questions in the Physics first paper.
Fifth, those responsible for setting the flawed Physics first-paper questions have been temporarily suspended.
For the prime minister, Mahdi Amin said, the HSC is not merely an exam but a crucial juncture in shaping the future of those who will build tomorrow’s Bangladesh, and the government was therefore striving to conduct the exams with the utmost sincerity and responsibility. Ensuring students’ welfare and the continuity of their education along that path, he said, was one of the priorities of a democratic state.
