NARAIL — The Workers Welfare Federation held a discussion meeting and a procession in Narail on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, organizers said.
The meeting was held at the Muktamancha open-air stage in the old bus terminal area on the morning of May 1, after a procession circled the main roads of the town.
Shariful Islam Beg, president of the federation’s Narail Sadar upazila unit, presided. Ataur Rahman Bachchu, the lawmaker for Narail-2, was chief guest.
Zakir Hossain Biswas, deputy chief of the district unit of Jamaat-e-Islami, was the main speaker. Saimum Hossain Shamim, president of the federation’s Narail municipal unit, moderated.
Special guests included Maulana Akidul Islam, president of the federation’s Narail district unit; Hafez Maulana Mirajul Islam, the unit’s general secretary; Hafez Maulana Abdullah Al Amin, the Jamaat-e-Islami chief for Sadar upazila; advocate Kazi Ziaur Rahman Pikul, additional public prosecutor at the Narail district court; M Hedayet Hossain, president of the Bangladesh Krishijibi Sramik Union’s district unit; and the union’s general secretary, Dr. Kawsar Uddin.
Speakers said May Day observances would not change workers’ circumstances unless the rights they said God had granted to workers were enforced through the constitution.
They said the government allocates significant resources for agricultural workers and that workers must claim those entitlements themselves.
