A tense standoff has gripped the entire campus of Noakhali Science and Technology University (NSTU) after two factions of Chhatra Dal, involving outsiders, engaged in repeated clashes and chases. A large contingent of police has been deployed across the university to prevent further unrest, alongside members of various intelligence agencies who remain active on campus.
The clashes between the two Chhatra Dal factions took place at various points on campus Tuesday afternoon, August 18. In the unrest, which ran from past midnight through the afternoon, at least nine people, including a journalist, were injured. One outsider was detained during the clashes and handed over to police.
The incidents have caused extreme fear and anxiety among ordinary students. University authorities, however, have assured students they will remain on maximum alert to ensure their safety.
The university and hall administrations have taken a tough stance to bring the situation under control. The campus’s pocket gates have been declared closed until further notice. Access to Bhasha Shaheed Abdus Salam Hall and Bir Muktijoddha Abdul Malek Ukil Hall has also been restricted. Students are now being allowed into the halls only after their identities are strictly verified. The proctorial body is currently patrolling the entire campus around the clock.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Golam Rabbani said all necessary protective measures had been taken to ensure students’ safety. Joint monitoring by police and the university administration would continue to restore lasting peace and order on campus, he said.
