Basanta Raj Adhikari, director of the Centre for Disaster Studies at Tribhuvan University in Nepal, has said a “second and third wave” of flooding could strike today or tomorrow.

“We still don’t know” how the situation will unfold, he said.

Adhikari said discussions are continuing with colleagues monitoring the situation in China, adding: “There isn’t heavy rainfall, but landslides could still occur.”

He said his team has long been monitoring natural hazards in the Himalayan region. “Climate change is truly happening here,” he said.

He added: “We were monitoring the situation, but we didn’t know it would happen on this particular day.”
