Turkey has applied for an Interpol red notice against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Israeli official Ofek Moskovich over an attack in international waters on workers aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek disclosed the move.

Gurlek said judicial proceedings over the attack on the aid workers are under way at Istanbul’s 11th Heavy Criminal Court. A total of 35 people have been named as defendants in the case, numbered 2026/108, including Netanyahu and Moskovich.

Gurlek said arrest warrants were issued against Netanyahu and Moskovich on July 14 on genocide charges. Turkey’s Justice Ministry subsequently asked the Interior Ministry to pursue an Interpol red notice to have them declared wanted internationally, and the relevant documents have been sent to the Foreign Ministry.

According to the Turkish justice minister, Netanyahu and Moskovich are being tried over an armed operation against, and the detention of, civilians who were delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza in international waters.

They face charges including crimes against humanity, genocide, serious deprivation of liberty, intentional wounding, torture, damage to property, aggravated robbery and hijacking a means of transport.

Gurlek said Turkey rejects the notion that the Netanyahu government should remain beyond accountability because of Israeli government policy in Gaza.

He added that Turkey will continue pursuing the matter through national and international legal channels, and said that under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s leadership, Turkey will continue to stand with the Palestinian people and other victims of oppression.
