Squally weather may sweep the north Bay of Bengal and the country’s coastal areas under the influence of a land depression. Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra sea ports have been asked to hoist local warning signal No 3.

The Bangladesh Meteorological Department gave the information in a warning bulletin on Friday, Aug 14.

According to the department, the land depression that was over the West Bengal coast and adjoining areas has moved west-north-westwards and now lies over Jharkhand and neighbouring Gangetic West Bengal. It may move further west-north-westwards and weaken gradually. Squally weather is likely over the north Bay of Bengal, the sea ports and Bangladesh’s coastal areas under its influence, and the four sea ports have accordingly been asked to hoist local warning signal No 3.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay of Bengal have been advised to stay close to the coast and proceed with caution until further notice.

The Met Office has advised all those in maritime and coastal areas, including vessels, to remain alert because of the likelihood of squally weather.
