DHAKA — Fast bowler Nahid Rana is in the form of his career. He has been recognized for a blistering performance in last month’s home One Day International series against New Zealand.
The International Cricket Council, the sport’s global governing body, officially announced the player of the month award for April on Thursday.
The Bangladesh pace star beat Oman’s Jatinder Singh and the United Arab Emirates’ Ajay Kumar to claim the honor. It is the first time Rana has won the ICC’s monthly award. He is the first Bangladesh cricketer to earn the men’s award since Mehidy Hasan Miraz in April last year.
Rana took 8 wickets in the three-match ODI series against the Black Caps. He was subdued in the first match but turned in a ferocious display in the second ODI, taking the second five-wicket haul of his career. He then took 2 wickets in the series-deciding final match in Chattogram, playing a leading role in Bangladesh’s 2-1 series win. The dominant performance also earned him the player of the series award. Rana took 8 wickets in the three-match ODI series against Pakistan in March, matching his New Zealand tally.
An elated Nahid Rana said after receiving the ICC honor: “Being named ICC Player of the Month after performing well against a world-class team like New Zealand is truly a great feeling. Such a performance at home makes the series even more special. It is a series I will always remember.”
