CHANDPUR, Bangladesh — Bangladesh’s education minister, Dr. A.N.M. Ehsanul Haque Milon, said the country’s young generation will put the nation on the world map and that the government wants children to stay engaged in sports and study year-round.
Milon, who also holds the primary and mass education portfolio, said he believes the next generation will present Bangladesh to the world as a new nation. Keeping children active in sports and study will sharpen their intellect and character, he said.
The minister spoke Saturday afternoon at Chandpur Stadium during the opening ceremony of Notun Kuri Sports 2026, organized by the district administration.
The late President Ziaur Rahman launched events like Notun Kuri across the country, and many talents emerged from it, Milon said. His eldest son, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, is now finding talented children through Notun Kuri Sports. Bangladesh has not received its fair share in world sports, the minister said. The prime minister has launched the event so that the country’s children can take part in world-class sports and claim a fair share in the future.
Milon said the previous government allowed social decay among young people, who fell into drug addiction. The fascist government took no effective steps on the issue, he said. The current prime minister wants students to find joy in learning, he added.
Additional District Magistrate Nazmun Nahar chaired the event. Special guests included Sheikh Farid Ahmed Manik, member of parliament for Chandpur-3; M.A. Hannan, M.P. for Chandpur-4; and engineer Mominul Haque, M.P. for Chandpur-5.
After his speech, the minister formally opened Notun Kuri Sports 2026 by releasing balloons. Students taking part in the various sporting events were present.
