It was not an easy path, but five-time world champions Brazil secured their place in the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup with a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Japan at Houston’s NRG Stadium.
Casemiro and Martinelli scored the goals that rescued Brazil after they fell behind.
They will now face dark horses Norway in the round of 16.
Meanwhile, England came from behind to beat the Democratic Republic of Congo 2-1 at Atlanta Stadium on Wednesday (July 1). Captain Harry Kane scored both goals to lead the comeback.
The win not only took England into the next round but also ended a long-standing record. It was the first time since the 1990 World Cup that England had come from behind to win a match in the tournament. In that 1990 edition, they beat Cameroon in extra time.
On Tuesday (June 30), Mexico beat Ecuador 2-0 to confirm their round of 16 spot.
Brazil will face Norway on Sunday (July 5) in the round of 16. If they beat Norway, they will meet the winner of the England-Mexico match in the quarterfinals.
